Sparks

Sparks is the long-running and famously idiosyncratic pop-rock duo formed by brothers Ron and Russell Mael. Originally hailing from Los Angeles, the band first gained attention in the early 1970s with their witty lyrics, theatrical flair, and genre-defying sound that blends glam rock, synth pop, classical, and everything in between. Known for Ron’s deadpan expression and intricate keyboard work alongside Russell’s dynamic and eclectic vocal delivery, Sparks developed a cult following across decades while influencing a wide range of artists from Queen and Depeche Mode to Franz Ferdinand and Beck.

Their career has been marked by constant reinvention, quirky humor, and remarkable longevity, with critically acclaimed albums like Kimono My House, No. 1 in Heaven, and more recently, A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip. In 2021, their fascinating journey was featured in Edgar Wright’s documentary The Sparks Brothers, bringing renewed attention to their vastly influential discography. Still going strong after 50 years, Sparks continue to challenge pop conventions while maintaining their unmistakable charm and originality.
