Edward Tarr

Edward H. Tarr (1936–2020) was an American-born trumpet player and musicologist best known for his work in early music, especially Baroque trumpet performance. Over the course of his career he became a key figure in the historically informed performance movement, combining scholarship with vivid, stylistically aware playing.

Tarr recorded widely—often focusing on Baroque and Classical trumpet repertoire—and also contributed as an editor and researcher, helping expand modern understanding of historical trumpet technique and repertoire. His name shows up frequently on recordings centered on “natural”/Baroque trumpet music and related chamber works, reflecting both his performance profile and his long-running dedication to the instrument’s history.
