Mykola Leontovych

Mykola Leontovych was a Ukrainian composer, choral conductor, and teacher, best known around the world for his iconic holiday piece “Shchedryk,” which was later adapted into English as “Carol of the Bells.” Born in 1877, Leontovych had a deep passion for Ukrainian folk music and dedicated much of his life to arranging traditional songs for choir, blending intricate harmonies with the rich musical heritage of his homeland.

Leontovych studied music at various institutions and became a respected figure in Ukrainian choral music. Tragically, his life was cut short in 1921 under mysterious circumstances, but his musical legacy lives on—especially each winter when “Carol of the Bells” rings out in countless holiday concerts, commercials, and films around the world. His work remains a shining example of how local folk traditions can resonate on a global scale.
