African Percussion

African percussion is a rhythm-centered genre rooted in West and Central African traditions, built from interlocking drum patterns, call-and-response phrases, and communal groove. Using instruments such as djembe, dunun, talking drum, congas, bells, and shakers, ensembles layer polyrhythms that shift between tightly arranged ostinatos and improvisational bursts led by a master drummer. The music often accompanies dance, storytelling, ceremonies, and festivals, emphasizing dynamic contrasts, timbral variety, and precise ensemble conversation. Whether presented by village-style drum circles, touring ballet troupes, or modern Afro-percussion groups, it delivers a driving, celebratory pulse that’s as physical as it is musical.
