Afro-cuban Percussion

Afro-Cuban percussion is a rhythm-centered genre rooted in the African diasporic traditions of Cuba, where drums and voice carry the music’s main narrative. Built from rumba and sacred Yoruba-influenced forms, it features interlocking patterns (clave as the organizing pulse), call-and-response singing, and dense polyrhythms played on congas/tumbadoras, batá, bongó, cajón, chekeré, and hand percussion. Ensembles often layer a steady timekeeping part with improvising lead drums, creating a driving, conversational groove that can shift from earthy street rumba to ceremonial intensity while staying anchored in dance, community, and deep rhythmic discipline.
