Alphorn

Alphorn music is a traditional Alpine genre centered on the long wooden alphorn, whose warm, resonant tones and natural-harmonic melodies evoke mountain landscapes and pastoral life. Rooted in Swiss, Austrian, and Bavarian folk practice, it often features call-and-response phrases, sustained drones, and ringing overtone-rich chords played by duos, trios, or quartets, sometimes joined by village brass bands or light folk ensembles. While many performances preserve ceremonial and communal traditions, modern groups also explore tighter arrangements, rhythmic drive, and crossover touches—without losing the instrument’s spacious, echoing character.
