American primitive is a loose, mostly acoustic guitar tradition rooted in folk and blues but pushed toward idiosyncratic, personal soundworlds. It favors fingerpicked patterns, altered tunings, droning open strings, and cyclical motifs that can feel both meditative and restless, often suggesting wide landscapes, porch light intimacy, or rough-hewn travelogues without needing lyrics. Technique ranges from delicate, chiming harmonics to percussive thumps and ragged, driving syncopation, with room for improvisation and abstract, modernist turns. The overall feel is handmade and unpolished in the best sense: raw tone, close-mic detail, and a focus on touch, time, and texture.
