Avant-prog
Avant-prog (avant-progressive) is a forward-leaning strain of progressive music that fuses rock instrumentation and long-form composition with the risk-taking mindset of the avant-garde. It favors odd meters, shifting polyrhythms, abrupt structural turns, and intricate counterpoint, often treating a band like a chamber ensemble as much as a rock unit. The sound can move from angular riffs to dense, interlocking patterns, from jagged satire to austere minimalism, and from jazz-informed improvisation to meticulously notated passages. Rather than aiming for virtuosity as flash, avant-prog uses complexity, timbre, and collage-like arrangement to challenge expectations while still delivering kinetic drive.
