Bomba is an Afro–Andean music and dance tradition from Ecuador’s Chota Valley and surrounding northern highlands, built around the deep pulse of the bomba drum (often a double-headed hand drum) that anchors call-and-response vocals, clapping, and festive chorus lines. Over that earthy groove, ensembles weave bright guitar or requinto strums, bass, and melodic riffs from sax or other winds, creating a sound that’s both rustic and dance-floor-ready. The rhythm often swings between steady, marching patterns and syncopated accents that invite hip movement and improvisation, while lyrics celebrate community life, love, humor, and local pride.
