British Folk

British folk is a roots-based genre drawn from the traditional songs and dance tunes of England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, often centered on narrative storytelling and regional history. It commonly features acoustic instruments such as fiddle, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, whistles, and accordion, with arrangements ranging from intimate solo ballads to tight, virtuosic ensembles. Melodies can be modal and lyrical, with driving reels and jigs alongside reflective, haunting airs. Modern British folk frequently blends tradition with contemporary songwriting and subtle rock or chamber textures, while keeping a clear emphasis on songcraft, atmosphere, and the voice as a primary storyteller.
