Britpop

Britpop emerged in the UK in the mid-1990s, characterized by catchy hooks, guitar-driven melodies, and witty, observational lyrics. The genre's defining sound blended indie rock's energy with the catchy, anthemic qualities of British Invasion bands. Influenced by 1960s British psychedelia and mod culture, Britpop drew on a rich musical heritage, while its irreverent, ironic attitude and regional accents reflected the era's post-Thatcherite social landscape. At its peak (1994-1997), Britpop dominated the UK charts, with its working-class, anti-establishment ethos resonating with a generation disillusioned with mainstream culture. Britpop's relationship to other genres, such as indie rock, psychedelia, and new wave, was marked by a distinctively British flavor, with its own brand of swagger and humor. Notable elements included the use of British slang, wry humor, and a nostalgia for bygone eras, setting it apart from its grunge and alternative contemporaries.
