Broken Beat
Broken beat (often “bruk”) is a UK-rooted offshoot of house and jazz-funk built on deliberately “broken,” syncopated drum patterns—skipping the straight four-on-the-floor in favor of swung kicks, restless snares, and intricate percussion. Typically sitting around 95–130 BPM, it blends warm Rhodes chords, deep sub-bass, Latin and Afro-inflected rhythms, and soulful vocals with a DJ-friendly sense of groove. The sound moves fluidly between dancefloor drive and musicianship, borrowing from broken funk, downtempo, and drum-centric club music while keeping a loose, human feel—tight yet off-kilter, head-nodding and uplifting at once.
