Broken transmission, a subgenre of vaporwave, is an aural collage of fragmented broadcasts, hazy nostalgia, and warped media samples, often conveying a surreal or dystopian soundscape. Characterized by its manipulation of Muzak, old TV shows, commercials, and news snippets, it evokes a sense of dislocation from time and space, simulating the experience of channel surfing through a spectral television set. The music often features pitch-shifted or slowed-down samples, creating an uncanny valley where the familiar becomes alien.
