Brutal Prog

Brutal prog, a subgenre that marries the complexity and technical prowess of progressive rock with the intensity and aggression typically associated with metal or extreme experimental music, is not for the faint of heart. It often features unpredictable time signatures, highly intricate and frenetic instrumentation, and an unorthodox approach to melody and harmony that challenges conventional musical norms. The visceral energy of brutal prog is amplified by aggressive, sometimes dissonant guitar riffs, erratic drum patterns, and a general disregard for traditional song structures, creating an overwhelming and immersive sonic experience. Bands like Orthrelm and Ruins exemplify this intense fusion, where highly skilled musicianship meets the raw power of avant-garde noise, resulting in a genre that pushes the boundaries of both progressive rock and underground metal.
