Cambodian Rock

Cambodian rock is a vibrant and eclectic genre that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s, intertwining traditional Khmer music with the electrifying energy of Western rock and roll, surf rock, and psychedelia. Characterized by its unique blend of melodic Khmer vocals, prominent guitar riffs, and rhythmic percussion, the genre often incorporates traditional instruments like the tro and roneat within a rock framework. Artists like Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Serey Sothea, and Pan Ron crafted hauntingly beautiful melodies that explore themes of love, heartache, and societal change. Despite being nearly obliterated during the Khmer Rouge regime, Cambodian rock has experienced a revival, with modern bands like Dengue Fever reinvigorating its legacy and introducing it to new generations.
