Canterbury Scene

The Canterbury scene is a strand of late‑60s/70s British progressive rock rooted around Canterbury, blending jazz harmony and improvisation with rock songcraft and a distinctly whimsical, literate sensibility. Its music favors fluid, melodic bass lines, busy but light-footed drumming, and keyboard- and woodwind-led arrangements that shift between intricate odd-meter passages and relaxed, pastoral grooves. Vocals often carry dry humor or surreal storytelling, while the playing can be virtuosic without losing warmth. The result is cerebral yet playful prog: chamber-like textures, jazz-rock fusion touch, and a gently eccentric English character.
