Charanga

Charanga is a vibrant and rhythmic genre of Cuban dance music that gained popularity in the mid-20th century. Characterized by the elegant and melodious sound of the flute, which intertwines with the crisp harmony of a string section typically featuring violins, charanga delivers a unique sonic texture. Supported by an array of Afro-Cuban percussion—including congas, timbales, and güiro—it creates an infectious beat that compels audiences to dance. In addition to its foundational instruments, piano and double bass add depth to the lively ensemble. Expanding its roots from danzón, charanga incorporates various Latin music styles like son, mambo, and cha-cha-cha. Fusing traditional Cuban melodies with African rhythms, this genre invigorates and inspires, making it a beloved staple in salsa music and social dance events worldwide.
