Chillhop

Chillhop is a genre of instrumental hip hop and electronic music characterized by its mellow, atmospheric soundscapes, often featuring elements of jazz and soul. Emerging in the 2010s, chillhop evolved from lo-fi hip hop and trip-hop, with artists incorporating laid-back beats, lush instrumentation, and subtle vinyl crackle. Typically, the genre features downtempo rhythms, jazzy chord progressions, and a blend of digital and organic instrumentation, including piano, guitar, and vinyl samples. Chillhop's calming, nostalgia-tinged aesthetic resonated with a generation seeking relaxing, focus-friendly music, often used as study or sleep music. Influenced by 1990s hip hop and electronic music, chillhop intersects with ambient, trip-hop, and lo-fi house, yet its distinct blend of hip hop's rhythmic foundation with jazz and soul's melodic sensibilities sets it apart.
