Cloud rap is a subgenre of hip hop characterized by its dreamy, atmospheric soundscapes, often featuring lush, filtered synths, and laid-back, trap-influenced beats. Emerging in the mid-2010s, cloud rap drew inspiration from Southern hip hop, chillwave, and ambient music, with artists experimenting with ethereal, effects-heavy vocal styles and introspective, emotive lyrics. This genre thrived on online platforms, resonating with a generation seeking melancholic, nostalgia-tinged escapism. Cloud rap's cultural significance lies in its reflection of millennial anxiety and its blurring of boundaries between hip hop, electronic, and indie music. With its hypnotic, melodic flows and often, lo-fi production, cloud rap distinguished itself from other styles, creating a unique sonic landscape that continues to influence contemporary hip hop and electronic music.
