Death metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music characterized by its intense, aggressive sound and fast tempo, typically featuring rapid, palm-muted guitar riffs, blast beat drumming, and growling or screaming vocals. Emerging in the mid-1980s, death metal evolved from thrash metal, with early pioneers drawing inspiration from punk and hardcore. The genre gained popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly among underground music enthusiasts. Death metal's cultural significance lies in its portrayal of mortality, violence, and social critique, often sparking controversy and debate. Notable for its technical complexity and musical virtuosity, death metal has influenced a range of related styles, including grindcore and melodic death metal. Distinguishing features include its use of atypical time signatures, complex song structures, and a focus on musicianship, setting it apart from other extreme metal genres.
