Depressive black metal, often abbreviated as DSBM, is a subgenre of black metal characterized by its raw, atmospheric soundscapes and an overarching sense of melancholy and despair. The music typically combines the traditional aggression and fast-paced tremolo picking of black metal with more introspective and sorrowful melodies. Lyrical themes delve into personal anguish, existential dread, self-harm, and a pervasive sense of hopelessness, aiming to evoke an emotional experience of suffering. Vocals often alternate between tormented shrieks and desolate, sometimes whispered, clean singing. The production may be lo-fi, enhancing the music's cold and desolate atmosphere.
