Folk rock, emerging in the 1960s, is a genre characterized by its fusion of traditional folk music's storytelling and acoustic instrumentation with the electric energy and production of rock music. Typically featuring jangly guitars, driving rhythms, and soaring vocal harmonies, folk rock often explores themes of social commentary, personal introspection, and cultural critique. Born from the intersection of folk revival and the burgeoning counterculture movement, folk rock's heyday spanned the mid-1960s to the early 1970s, with iconic artists blending folk's earthiness with rock's amplification and experimentation. As a genre, folk rock played a significant role in shaping popular music, influencing the development of singer-songwriter and Americana styles. Its unique blend of earthy authenticity and electrified urgency set it apart from its folk and rock counterparts, making it a staple of the era's musical landscape.
