Jamgrass

Jamgrass is a dynamic and eclectic music genre that emerged in the 1990s, blending elements of bluegrass, rock, folk, and psychedelic music. Characterized by its high-energy improvisation, intricate instrumental arrangements, and often, extended jam sessions, jamgrass combines traditional bluegrass instrumentation with modern rock sensibilities. Born out of the jam band movement, this genre draws on the roots of American folk and Appalachian string band traditions, while incorporating elements of rock, jazz, and world music. During its heyday in the late 1990s and early 2000s, jamgrass became a staple of the festival circuit, appealing to fans of bluegrass, rock, and experimental music alike. What sets jamgrass apart is its willingness to push boundaries and defy traditional bluegrass conventions, embracing a more free-form, improvisational approach that reflects the genre's countercultural and psychedelic influences, while maintaining a deep respect for the roots of American string band music.
