Jug Band

Jug band music is a buoyant and rhythmic genre that emerged in the early 20th century, often associated with the American South, particularly Memphis, Tennessee. It combines elements of blues, jazz, and ragtime, and is distinguished by the use of homemade or unconventional instruments such as the jug, which players would blow into to create a deep, resonant bass sound, as well as washboards, spoons, kazoos, and banjos. The music typically features a mix of stringed instruments and harmonicas, reflecting a joyful, spontaneous street performance vibe. The eclectic instrumentation is mirrored in the genre's carefree and improvisational style, and jug bands have historically brought a playful approach to both traditional songs and original compositions, delivering a lively and infectious sound that encourages toe-tapping and dancing.
