Korean minyo (민요) is Korea’s traditional folk song genre, rooted in the everyday lives of farmers, fishermen, and workers and shaped by regional styles. Typically sung with a bright, forward tone and expressive vibrato, minyo features ornamented melodies, call-and-response phrases, and flexible rhythms that can swing between driving dance pulses and free, speech-like passages. Performances often center on a solo vocalist supported by percussion (janggu, buk) and sometimes melodic accompaniment such as piri, daegeum, or gayageum, though modern ensembles may add richer arrangements. Lyrically, minyo ranges from humor and courtship to hardship and communal pride, emphasizing storytelling and vocal nuance.
