The genre's sound is often described as a blend of melodic death metal, gothic metal, and power metal, with a focus on atmospheric and symphonic elements. Oulu metal's heyday was in the early 2000s, with bands from the region gaining international recognition. Culturally, the genre reflects the somber and introspective nature of Finnish culture, with lyrics often exploring themes of nature, mortality, and personal struggle.
