Outlaw country is a genre characterized by its raw, rootsy sound, often featuring twangy guitars, pedal steel, and driving rhythms. Emerging in the late 1960s and 1970s, it was a reaction against the slick, polished production of mainstream country music. Artists associated with the genre drew from traditional country, blues, and folk, embracing a more authentic, rebellious spirit. Outlaw country's heyday coincided with the counterculture movement, resonating with listeners seeking music that was real, honest, and unapologetic. This genre's impact lies in its influence on subsequent country-rock and Americana movements, and its enduring appeal stems from its unbridled energy, poignant storytelling, and a distinctive blend of country, rock, and folk sensibilities.
