Philly Drill

Philly drill is a raw, intense branch of the hip-hop genre that has incubated within Philadelphia's urban soundscape, drawing from the gritty reality of the streets and often characterized by its aggressive lyrics and dark, pounding beats. While it shares similarities with its Chicago and UK drill cousins in its focus on flow and the depiction of gang-related lifestyles, Philly drill adapts to the unique cultural and musical background of Philadelphia. The sound features a distinctive East Coast harshness and an unflinching exploration of the struggles of street life. Artists such as OT7 Quanny, YungLiV, and Poundside Pop have become prominent voices within the scene, using their music as a vehicle to depict the raw stories and the relentless energy of Philly's underbelly, sometimes laced with a melodic undercurrent that aligns with the emotional narratives woven into the fabric of their works.
