Ryukyu Ongaku

Ryukyu ongaku is the traditional music of the Ryukyu Islands (especially Okinawa), centered on intimate, voice-led storytelling and the bright, percussive twang of the sanshin (three‑string lute). Songs often move in pentatonic-like modes with sliding ornaments and a buoyant swing that can feel both earthy and lilting, shifting between festive dance pieces (kachāshī), ceremonial repertoire, and deeply emotional ballads. Lyrics commonly use Okinawan languages and evoke island life—sea, farming, love, exile, and remembrance—while performances balance refined technique with a communal, participatory spirit, sometimes joined by taiko, flute, or simple clapping.
