Scratch

Scratch music is a dynamic, turntable-based genre that emerged in the 1990s, characterized by intricate rhythmic patterns, vinyl manipulation, and a fusion of hip-hop, electronic, and jazz elements. Developed from the art of DJing, scratch music emphasizes creative sampling, innovative scratching techniques, and often, humorous and irreverent lyrics. Key artists of the genre, often associated with labels like Ninja Tune and Stones Throw, pushed the boundaries of turntablism, incorporating eclectic samples, breakbeats, and instrumental textures. Scratch music's cultural significance lies in its democratization of music creation, allowing artists to experiment and subvert traditional notions of musicianship. Its impact is evident in its influence on subsequent genres like IDM and electronic hip-hop, as well as its continued relevance in contemporary turntablist communities.
