Smooth jazz is a genre characterized by its relaxed, melodic sound, often featuring a blend of jazz, R&B, and pop elements. Emerging in the late 1970s and 1980s, smooth jazz drew from the funk and soul traditions of the preceding decade, incorporating electronic production techniques and a polished, radio-friendly aesthetic. The genre's heyday in the 1980s and 1990s saw widespread popularity, with artists creating a distinctive sound marked by lush instrumentation, often featuring saxophone, guitar, and keyboards, alongside soulful, laid-back vocals. Smooth jazz drew criticism for its perceived homogenization of jazz, yet its cultural significance lies in its accessibility and broad appeal, introducing jazz to new audiences and influencing contemporary urban and adult contemporary music. Notable for its fusion of jazz sophistication with pop sensibilities, smooth jazz remains a distinct genre that, despite its critics, has contributed to the evolution of jazz and its continued relevance in modern music.
