Soul blues is a genre characterized by its emotive, heartfelt sound, blending the intensity of blues with the raw, soulful expression of R&B. Emerging in the 1950s and 60s, soul blues drew from African American musical traditions, incorporating gospel, jazz, and rhythm and blues to create a unique sound. Defined by its slow-burning, often melancholic tempo, soul blues features soulful vocals, often accompanied by a stripped-down, yet powerful ensemble of guitars, keyboards, and horns. The genre's heyday in the 1960s and 70s saw it become a powerful voice for social commentary and personal struggle, with its emotional authenticity resonating deeply with audiences. Soul blues shares ties with other genres like blues, R&B, and southern soul, yet its distinctive blend of emotional intensity and musical simplicity sets it apart.
