Southern hip hop, also known as trap, is a subgenre characterized by its heavy, syncopated rhythms, often produced with 808 drums and synthesized melodies. Emerging in the late 1990s and early 2000s, it originated in the Southern United States, particularly in Atlanta, Georgia, and Memphis, Tennessee. The genre gained mainstream popularity in the 2010s, with its cultural significance lying in its raw, emotive storytelling and unapologetic portrayal of life in the urban South. Southern hip hop draws from crunk, gangsta rap, and electronic music, but its unique blend of melodic flows, introspective lyrics, and experimental production sets it apart. Notable for its atmospheric soundscapes and often auto-tuned vocal styles, southern hip hop has become a staple of contemporary hip hop, influencing a new wave of artists and cementing its place in the genre's rich history.
