Steelpan is a vibrant Caribbean-rooted genre centered on the steel drum, an instrument invented in Trinidad and Tobago and tuned to produce warm, bell-like tones and rich chord voicings. Music is often performed by steel bands or orchestras, where different pans cover bass, harmony, and melody in interlocking rhythmic layers driven by calypso and soca grooves, with Afro-Caribbean percussion and danceable syncopation. While closely tied to Carnival traditions, steelpan ensembles also adapt jazz, pop, classical, and film themes, showcasing virtuosic improvisation, tight ensemble precision, and a bright, celebratory sound.
