Stoner Rock

Stoner rock is a subgenre of heavy rock music characterized by its fuzzy, distorted guitar riffs, plodding rhythms, and often, laid-back, blues-inspired vocals. Emerging in the 1990s, stoner rock drew inspiration from 1970s heavy metal, punk, and psychedelia, with bands embracing a DIY ethos and a fascination with the darker side of life. The genre's heyday coincided with the grunge era, but its roots stretch back to the heavy, riff-based sound of Black Sabbath. Stoner rock's signature sound is marked by its use of downtuned guitars, driving beats, and a generally heavy, fuzz-laden texture. The genre's cultural significance lies in its reflection of a countercultural ethos, embracing excess and nonconformity. While sharing similarities with doom metal and sludge metal, stoner rock's emphasis on groove and melody sets it apart, making it a unique and captivating force in the world of heavy music.
