Turntablism

Turntablism is a dynamic, instrumental music genre born out of the hip-hop movement in the 1970s and 1980s. Characterized by its focus on vinyl manipulation, turntablism features intricate scratching, sampling, and beat juggling techniques, often creating complex, percussive rhythms and melodic phrases. Emerging from the DJ culture of New York City, turntablism evolved as a distinct art form, with pioneers experimenting with turntable instrumentation and pushing the boundaries of sound. Reaching its peak in the 1990s and early 2000s, turntablism influenced a wide range of genres, including electronic, rock, and hip-hop, while maintaining its unique identity. Notable for its emphasis on technical skill and sonic innovation, turntablism has become a staple of music festivals and competitions, with its virtuosic performers showcasing their dexterity and musicality.
