Viral Trap

Viral trap is a subgenre of trap music that emerged in the mid-2010s, characterized by its heavy, distorted 808 basslines, minimalist melodies, and often, catchy, sing-along hooks. Originating on social media platforms, particularly Vine and SoundCloud, viral trap drew from hip-hop, electronic, and pop influences, with artists often incorporating elements of Atlanta's trap scene and Southern hip-hop. The genre's popularity peaked around 2015-2017, with its cultural significance lying in its DIY ethos and ability to launch careers through online virality. Viral trap's blend of heavy, street-oriented production with infectious, pop-infused hooks set it apart from traditional trap, while its emphasis on melodic flow and lyrical simplicity distinguished it from more lyrical hip-hop styles.
