Washboard is a rootsy, rhythm-first genre built around the washboard (often fingered with thimbles, picks, or brushes) as a crisp, percussive lead instrument. Drawing from early jazz and jug-band traditions as well as blues, Cajun, folk, and old-time string music, it turns everyday texture into groove: scraping, tapping, and rattling patterns that lock with guitar, fiddle, banjo, upright bass, horns, or vocals. Performances tend to be lively and communal, with improvised breaks and call-and-response energy, balancing vintage dancehall swing with street-corner grit and a playful DIY spirit.
