West Coast Jazz

West Coast jazz is a smooth, cool variation of bebop that emerged in the 1950s, characterized by its relaxed tempos, intricate arrangements, and a strong emphasis on melody. Often featuring a lighter, more polished sound than its East Coast counterpart, it blends classical influences with subtle swing and precise instrumentation. Groups like the Vince Guaraldi Trio and the Billy Hicks Quartet exemplify the genre’s balance of sophistication and accessibility, while artists such as Allison Neale and Claude Williamson highlight its lyrical, airy phrasing. Often associated with Los Angeles and San Francisco, West Coast jazz remains a refined, expressive style known for its rich harmonic textures and understated rhythmic drive.
