Sven-David Sandström

Sven-David Sandström (1942 – 2019) was a prominent Swedish composer, renowned for his prolific output and his ability to bridge the gap between contemporary and classical music. Having gained a reputation as one of Sweden's leading modern composers, Sandström drew upon a wide array of influences, ranging from electronic music to traditional classical forms.

Throughout his career, Sandström demonstrated a strong affinity for vocal compositions, which is reflected in works such as "Credo" and "The Passion of St John." His "Sandström: 4 Songs of Love: No. 1, Let Him Kiss Me" exemplifies his ability to set complex, emotive text to music, revealing a deep understanding of the human voice as an instrument. Moreover, the series "Sven-David Sandström: Motets Inspired by Bach," Volumes 1 and 2, illustrates his reverence for the classical tradition, while still showcasing his own unique contemporary voice. Sandström also paid homage to his Nordic roots with compositions like "Nordic Mass." His contributions to the repertoire for church year, "Musik för kyrkoåret," underscore his significance in the realm of liturgical music. Sandström's music is characterized by its textural richness, harmonic depth, and an often dramatic, expressive quality that connects deeply with listeners.
