R.B. Greaves

R.B. Greaves was an American singer best known for his 1969 hit single “Take a Letter, Maria,” which blended soul and pop with a touch of Latin influence. The song reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over a million copies, becoming his signature track. His full name was Ronald Bertram Aloysius Greaves III, and he was the nephew of soul legend Sam Cooke.

Born in 1943 on an American airbase in Guyana and raised in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, Greaves recorded music that reflected a mix of cultural influences. After the success of his debut, he released a self-titled album that included several follow-up singles, though none matched the impact of “Take a Letter, Maria.” Known for his smooth voice and storytelling style, R.B. Greaves remains a memorable figure in the world of late ’60s and early ’70s soul-pop crossover music.
