Bar Avni is an Israeli conductor and classically trained percussionist who kicked off her music career banging drums at age 8, playing with Israel's top orchestras before switching gears to conducting. Born in 1989, she studied with Yoav Talmi in Tel Aviv—where she became assistant conductor of the Israel Chamber Orchestra—then honed her skills with Martin Sieghart in Graz and Ulrich Windfuhr in Hamburg, earning her M.A. in orchestral conducting in 2017/18.
She's made waves as the first woman Chief Conductor of Germany's Bayer Philharmoniker from 2021 to 2024, championing young talent and music education, and snagged first prize at the 2024 La Maestra competition in Paris, sweeping extra awards like the Orchestra Prize and ARTE Prize. With a rep for her elegant style and bold programming, Bar's led ensembles like the Israel Philharmonic, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, and Gothenburg Symphony, and she's lined up debuts with heavy-hitters like the Orchestre de Paris and New York Philharmonic assists with Gustavo Dudamel.
