Alternative Rock

Alternative rock is a genre characterized by its eclecticism, experimentation, and fusion of various styles. Emerging in the 1980s and peaking in popularity in the 1990s, alternative rock rejected the commercialism of mainstream rock, instead embracing a DIY ethos and a more introspective, often angst-ridden lyrical focus. Musically, it's marked by distorted guitar riffs, driving rhythms, and introspective vocal styles that range from melodic to screaming. Key bands drew from punk, indie rock, and grunge, incorporating elements of psychedelia, electronica, and heavy metal. As a cultural force, alternative rock spoke to a generation disillusioned with mainstream culture, offering a voice for outsiders and misfits. Its influence can be seen in later genres like indie rock and emo, and its legacy continues to shape contemporary rock music.
