The genre's heyday was the early 1990s, with bands like Slowdive and Ride achieving critical acclaim. Shoegaze's cultural significance lies in its rejection of mainstream rock's bombast, instead embracing a more intimate, introspective sound. This style paved the way for later genres like chillwave and ambient pop.
