British Soul

British soul is a genre characterized by its emotive, heart-wrenching vocals, often delivered with a distinctive, soulful growl. Emerging in the 1980s, it drew inspiration from classic American soul, jazz, and R&B, infused with a distinctly British sensibility. Typically featuring lush, orchestral arrangements, and a blend of electronic and organic instrumentation, British soul often incorporates elements of trip-hop, acid jazz, and UK garage. The genre's heyday in the 2000s saw a surge in popularity, with its introspective, emotionally charged lyrics resonating with a wide audience. British soul's unique blend of melancholic introspection and sophisticated production sets it apart from its American counterpart, while its influence can be heard in subsequent genres like indie R&B and electronic soul.
