Laiko

Laiko, deriving its name from the Greek "λαϊκός" which means "popular," is a music genre that epitomizes the heart and soul of Greek musical tradition, deeply rooted in the sounds and themes of urban folk and popular music. Developed in the early 20th century, this genre often melds the emotive, earthy vocals reminiscent of Rembetiko's narrative vocal styles with contemporary Greek music. Laiko is characterized by its melodious instruments such as the bouzouki, guitar, and clarinet, and often features reflective, poignant lyrics that narrate the trials, passions, and joy found in everyday life. The genre maintains a notable presence in Greek culture, with modern artists infusing traditional elements with newer influences, keeping this quintessential Greek sound alive and evolving.
