Rebetiko

Rebetiko, often referred to as the Greek blues, is a music genre that emerged in the urban culture of Greece in the early 20th century. Characterized by its mournful melodies and often poignant, lyrical themes, it reflects the struggles and tales of the urban poor, the outcasts, and the working class. Traditional instruments such as the bouzouki, baglamas, and guitar are central to the sound of rebetiko, providing a distinctive, twanging resonance. Artists like Vassilis Tsitsanis and Sotiria Bellou have shaped the genre with their emotionally charged performances that touch upon themes of love, exile, loss, and political unrest. Over time, rebetiko has evolved, influenced by various musical styles, but always retaining its unique blend of Eastern and Western musical elements and its deep connection to Greek identity and culture.
