Sean-nos Singing

Sean-nós singing is an ancient and highly ornamented style of solo a cappella singing that is native to Ireland, particularly found in the Gaeltacht regions where Irish is commonly spoken. The term 'sean-nós' means "old style" in Irish, and this genre is characterized by its free, unaccompanied vocal delivery, which allows for expressive ornamentation, including melismatic flourishes and intricate variations on each verse. Often haunting and deeply emotive, sean-nós songs are usually sung in the Irish language and can encompass a wide range of subjects, from historical narratives to laments and love songs. The style is noted for its unique approach to rhythm and timing, with singers often taking liberties with the tempo to convey the emotional depth of the song. This revered art form is a touchstone of Irish cultural identity and has been kept alive by a lineage of esteemed singers who championed the tradition through personal interpretation and performance.
