Slack-key Guitar

Slack-key guitar, also known as ki ho'alu, is a unique and soothing music genre that originated in Hawaii in the 19th century. Characterized by a distinctive playing style that involves tuning the guitar to an open chord and using a thumb-picking technique, slack-key guitar creates a dreamy, atmospheric sound. Emerging in the 1960s and 1970s, the genre gained popularity through the work of local musicians who drew upon traditional Hawaiian music, folk, and blues influences. Slack-key guitar is deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture, often incorporating lyrics that celebrate island life, history, and mythology. With its calming, introspective quality, the genre has captivated audiences worldwide, influencing contemporary acoustic and folk music. Its distinctively relaxed, improvisational style sets it apart from other guitar-based genres, and its cultural significance has helped preserve Hawaiian musical heritage.
