Third Stream
Third Stream is a genre that blends jazz with classical music, creating a sophisticated fusion of improvisation and formal composition. Originating in the mid-20th century, it combines jazz's swing, syncopation, and spontaneity with classical structures, harmonies, and orchestration. Artists in this style, such as Jean-Baptiste Rees and Matt Herskowitz, incorporate elements from baroque counterpoint to modernist harmonies, often featuring intricate arrangements and virtuosic solo passages. Whether through orchestral textures, chamber ensemble interplay, or jazz-infused cadenzas, Third Stream remains a genre that bridges structural complexity with expressive freedom.
